Ok. Reading this nearly 40 years later. I was a troublemaking 17yo who lied to his parents about staying at a mates house when I was really going to my 3rd or 4th MOR at Donington. I remember being at the front and finding I was standing on something. As I looked down – I saw something I’ll never forget – a fair haired guy with a grey face who was unconscious. He was wearing a biker jacket so I managed to grab his lapels and pull him up and, God bless them, the crowd parted and I moved this guy about 10ft to the security barrier. Unfortunately for me, they dragged me over too. As I looked to my left – people were performing CPR on motionless figures. Rather amusingly, I was dragged past them and dragged to a side exit back into the crowd where a knobhead security guard threw a punch at me (and got lamped one back too) I never went back to Donington and I’ve been hyper vigilant at every concert I’ve been to since. The organisers should have gone to jail for this.

Funny anecdote – when I got home the next morning / my parents threw me out for lying to them. Haha. Not grumbling – my grandparents lived through wars. My drama was small beans.

I’ve always wondered if the guy I picked up survived. Hope he did.

Were you on the left or the right?

I was on the right, and had gone down in the second surge from the left (where the 2 lads were) I was unconscious until I was being pulled out (nose smashed, covered in blood…but before I went under I thought “I’m gonna die”, and I felt really serene about it) I remember seeing the 3 rows of people who had been in front of me stacked on top of each other, and just looking at them…I couldn’t do anything for them because I was only just coming to myself. A lad in a tan, fringed leather jacket got me to the side, then dived back in to help more people.

Bless that fkin guy, because without him, I’m sure that I and others would have been added to that body count that day ❤️

That was my first festival experience at 15. I didn’t understand the severity of it until I was in hospital the next day in my hometown and a nurse told me. Even then…and now, TBH…it seems surreal. Tonight is the first time I’ve googled it.

I’ve told this story a few times over the years, but nobody ever believes it lol they never heard about it! One time, a friend said “ah fuck! That’s in a book about GnR!”, but that was only 3 or 4 sentences. For some reason, it’s just been wiped out…

I was there. Rock City took the P*** that night. Selling drinks for as long as they could when they knew he wasn’t coming on. I bailed out quickly as it was clear it was going to go up big time. Police were already waiting outside, a line of cars, went wading in with truncheons and people being dragged out pouring with blood.
Lucky nobody was killed.
