Welcome to Music In The Attic!
I’m Ian and I was inspired to create this site during the 2020 lockdown when, during a rare trip up into my attic I stumbled across some boxes containing many of my once loved but long forgotten possessions. I literally spent hours up there after discovering all my old gig tickets, concert programmes, newspaper cuttings and other assorted music memorabilia that had been gathering dust for many years.

I also came across my old vinyl records, audio and video cassettes and CDs which I hadn’t hadn’t seen or played in many years.

I even found a suitcase full of my old band T-shirts and rock patches and badges which I used to wear back in the 1980s!

Like many people of my age I love a bit of nostalgia so, rather than leaving all this stuff up in the attic to gather MORE dust I decided to share it with like-minded people, hence Music In The Attic was born.
I also wrote about some of the special gigs I’d been to over the years including the original Monsters of Rock (now Download) festivals at Castle Donington in the 80s, Knebworth, Milton Keynes Bowl and of course the awesome Glastonbury Festival which I attended for 20 years.

Within a couple of years my little lockdown project had really taken off and before I knew it I was engaging with a couple of thousand social media followers, featuring in my first podcast, being interviewed by the BBC for an Ozzy Osbourne ‘riot’ story and appearing in an American rock documentary about the wild antics of Guns ‘N’ Roses! This was all a bit surreal for a boring old Project Manager who had grown up on on a Nottingham council estate, but oddly exciting at the time.

I also rediscovered my love of vinyl and since bringing my old records out of retirement in 2021 I have treated myself to a turntable (my first in over 30 years) and have been reliving the music of my youth, one click and static crackle at a time! It’s been emotional…

So what’s next for Music In The Attic? I genuinely have no idea! My enthusiasm for this website, my social media channels and the content itself comes and goes in waves. I’m also not getting any younger and I’m not sure if my family would thank me for leaving all this old stuff behind when I’m gone! Some days I’ve considered selling everything to help fund my retirement. On other days I remind myself that some of it holds sentimental value and I just couldn’t bring myself part with some things just yet (even those 40 year old band T-shirts which I’ll never get into again during my lifetime!).
Having said that, if somebody was to make me a ridiculous offer for something that would fund another trip to Australia, I could be seriously tempted. So if you see something you fancy…
Make me an offer!
